2018 ASAHPERD Fall Conference Tentative Program (10/5/18)

Online Physical Education Network, sponsored by US Games
ASAHPERD, OPEN, and US Games invite you to attend this year’s Pre-Convention Workshop on Sunday, November 4, 2018!  Chris Walker, an OPEN National Trainer from North Carolina, will provide an overview of the free OPEN curriculum materials.  Chris will highlight activities from a variety of the modules OPEN has constructed for teachers based on the SHAPE America National Standards.  These standards were utilized in the creation of the Alabama Physical Education Standards. OPEN is a free curriculum project that is designed to empower teachers with content that inspires students. This activity-based session will focus on easy ways to engage students and teach lessons that ensure academic rigor and inspire movement.  Every OPEN activity plan provides teaching strategies, academic language tools, and depth of knowledge debrief questions. All curriculum documents are downloadable in a format for easy editing and customization.  New teachers and veteran educators will both benefit from the tools in OPEN to be successful in the teacher evaluation process.  Make plans now to join Chris on November 4th from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM in the Hyatt Regency Riverchase Ballroom to learn more about this valuable physical education asset!

More Kids, More Smiles! RunJumpThrow for Everyone, USA Track and Field
The RunJumpThrow experience consists of operating an interactive, motivational and fun introduction to basic track and field drills that can be adapted for any physical education component.  You will "Learn by Doing" as staff from USATF take you through the basic principles and curriculum of RJT, including its adaptive elements.

CPR Certification: Adult and Child CPR with AED
This is an interactive 3-hour workshop covering material for anyone who has either an expired card or has not had the class.  The course will follow the latest Red Cross material that came out in 2017.  Cost of the card is $20. There is a 20-person limit. Email [email protected] reserve a space!

Bullying 101: A Teacher's Guide to Promoting an Anti-bulling School Environment
Our mission is to support facilities, schools and communities with identifying and resolving concerns related to bullying.  Additionally, we will assist with building relationships and resolving communication issues to prevent suicide in children and young adults.

Yoga for Athletes
Yoga has the potential to improve an athlete's performance through enhanced balance, flexibility, breath control and mental acuteness.  Learn (and do) a series of poses designed to improve athletic performance, reduce injury and maximize training.  Participants will also walk away with sport specific poses to take home and practice!

Sport & Exercise Science Workshop
1-Athlete Recovery and Return to Play: In this session we will discuss a variety of techniques to help athletes recover from injuries and sport-related problems. We will also discuss safe return to play guidance for athletes.

2-Nutrition and the Young Athlete: In this presentation we will consider the dual impacts of growth and development and sport involvement on the young athletes nutritional needs. Additionally, we will identify areas of concerns such as vegetarian diets, alcohol and nutritional supplements.
3-Hydration Knowledge and Practices among Athletes: In this presentation, we will discuss: the level of hydration knowledge among athletes, the hydration practices employed by athletes and the relationship between hydration knowledge, hydration practices and the incidence of heat-related injuries among athletes.
