How to Reach Your Lawmaker
Write your legislator.
- Be friendly: Get to know your legislator. Try to maintain contact throughout the year.
- Be courteous: Do not threaten or try to coerce. Put yourself in their place to try to understand his/her problems, outlooks and aims.
- Be accurate and factual: You can establish trust and credibility with the correct facts.
- Handwritten letters are the best: Limit the letter to one page. Do not send a form letter or a post card.
- Thank you's: The importance of a thank you cannot be overemphasized.

- Identify yourself first.
- Be brief.
- Refer to bill numbers whenever possible; however, do explain what it is.
- Explain why you support or oppose the bill.
