Write your legislator.

  • Be friendly: Get to know your legislator. Try to maintain contact throughout the year.
  • Be courteous: Do not threaten or try to coerce. Put yourself in their place to try to understand his/her problems, outlooks and aims.
  • Be accurate and factual: You can establish trust and credibility with the correct facts.
  • Handwritten letters are the best: Limit the letter to one page. Do not send a form letter or a post card.
  • Thank you's: The importance of a thank you cannot be overemphasized.

  • Identify yourself first.
  • Be brief.
  • Refer to bill numbers whenever possible; however, do explain what it is.
  • Explain why you support or oppose the bill.
